Late Deafened Adults

Association of Late Deafened Adults

http://www.alda.org/

ALDA was formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1987. Most of those that gathered there were total strangers who had never met or talked to another deafened person, yet they found themselves wonderfully comfortable with one another. There was an unspoken feeling of understanding and patience with each other's communication difficulties. The marvelous sense of fellowship lasted and led to more social gatherings and self help support groups, which swiftly evolved into the Association of Late Deafened Adults (ALDA). Today, ALDA's membership is international in scope. ALDA works collaboratively with other organizations around the world serving the needs of late-deafened people and extends a welcome to everyone, late deafened or not, who supports our goals.

Beyond Hearing

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/4727/bhframe.htm

The Beyond Hearing Web site (bhWEB) was developed to provide a companion web site for two listserves which support hearing loss and deafness. One listserve, bhLIST, focuses primarily on questions and answers about hearing loss. The other, bhNEWS, focuses mostly on news and news links about Deaf and Hard of Hearing issues and people. The bhWEB site has grown to include educational information about deafness and hearing loss, and about the community of people that participate in Beyond-Hearing. You're invited to not only visit bhWEB, but to subscribe to either or both listserves.

The Deafened People Page

http://www.deafened.org/

This site is not an organ for advocacy or a clearinghouse for technical information. Why? Because there are enough people to tell you what you should know, what you should have, what you should do, and even what you should feel. That is the misfortune of being a ‘Special Needs’ population. Everyone knows best. Some of these people who write in other publications or practice in the professions do not even experience deafness as we do. Even though I am deaf—perhaps like you—I want to tell you that I don’t know what is best for you. Neither does anybody else. The only person who can ever know what is best for you is you. Factoids about technical things and laws and skills are really only a snapshot of what was best for somebody else.
