Literacy Program Update

Joint Project between Deaf Empowerment and the WCLC

WANTED: Interested adult Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students for free literacy (reading/writing) program.

WHY: To improve English language literacy skills. Some example areas where Deaf Empowerment and the Winnebago County Literacy Council (WCLC) can assist:

  • Read to a child

  • Improve spelling

  • Understand work-related vocabulary

  • Fill out forms

  • Write letters/stories

  • Help child with homework

  • Read books/newspaper

  • Read road signs

  • Improve study habits

Since the March 2003 Empowering News article and the April 14, 2003, article in the Oshkosh Northwestern, many individuals (D/HH and hearing) who know sign language have come forward as volunteer tutors (teachers) to assist any adult in the D/HH community who is interested in reading/writing the English language better. THANK YOU to interested volunteer tutors!

Deaf Empowerment is working together with the WCLC. The WCLC is located at the Oshkosh Public Library; however, arrangements can be made to meet anywhere in the Fox Valley that is convenient for a tutor/student.

Deaf Empowerment and WCLC’s common goals are to expand services to the adult D/HH population; recruit and train adult D/HH tutors to work with adult D/HH students; and assist in educating the community about D/HH literacy issues and Deaf culture.

During June 9-10, Melanie Blechl of DE and WCLC staff will be attending a Wisconsin Literacy workshop in Wisconsin Rapids called “Collective Wisdom.” Some issues to be discussed include measuring success, flexible tutor training, workplace literacy, and free guides to financial literacy.

If you want to improve your English language literacy skills or become a volunteer tutor (must know sign language), please contact Melanie Blechl of DE at:

  • E-mail: Melanie@deafe.org

  • Phone/TTY: (920) 836-3306 (Use WI Relay to leave answering machine message)

  • Address: 3006 State Road 150; Neenah, WI 54956
