Deaf Empowerment is establishing a three-course Sign Language curriculum for people interested in learning Sign Language.  While our courses will help you with basic conversational Sign Language, and may be a good start for people, it is not our intention to prepare people to be interpreters. Our classes are geared toward people who want to be able to have a conversation with D/HH people who utilize Sign Language as their primary language.

Sign Language For Beginners

This course is designed for people who have little to no experience with Sign Language.  The class will cover the following major themes:

  • Fingerspelling (ABCs and 123s in sign)
  • Differences between ASL (American Sign Language) and English
  • Family relationships
  • Asking questions
  • Describing people
  • Giving / following directions
  • Deaf culture components
  • Addresses and describing where you live
  • Around the house
  • Calendars
  • Foods
