D/HH children often feel isolated and different than most of their peers.
They do not see many other D/HH children, and so therefore have few people who
can relate to them about their unique communication methods. A Deaf person
once said that she thought she would die before becoming an adult, because she
had never met a Deaf adult. The need for positive role models, and
opportunities for D/HH children to get together with others who have similar
life stories is immense. Deaf Empowerment will provide opportunities for youth
to get together on a social level. Additionally, Deaf Empowerment plans to
offer services to parents at many levels. Hearing parents who are thrown into
the D/HH world when they find out their child has a hearing loss need to
receive non-biased information to help them plan for their child’s education
and communication choices. Sometimes D/HH parents need help with parenting
skills they may have not received the same way other hearing parents may have,
and this will be a service that Deaf Empowerment will provide, too.
