Much of what people learn in terms of general skills, such as work habits,
financial planning and to some extent even literacy, is acquired by listening
to interactions between others. Children learn how to deal with “everyday”
issues by listening to their parents deal with these very same subjects. This
puts D/HH individuals at a disadvantage, in that they cannot “hear” these
conversations as hearing children might. Leaving what research refers to as
general knowledge gaps. General Skills services will focus on improving the
skills of D/HH individuals in areas such as literacy, financial planning,
translations, and other everyday type issues. In addition, Deaf Empowerment is
working to develop a library of resources for people to use related to D/HH
issues.
